Frequently Asked Questions:
How much will this Expert Medical Opinion service cost me?
There is no cost to you and it doesn’t affect your premium in any way. This service is funded by your Insurer.
Will my Insurer be provided with any information that I provide or with a copy of the medical specialist report that I get?
This is a confidential service and no individual personal or health information will be provided by mlcoa or the medical specialist to your Insurer. The only exception is where mlcoa may provide your name, date of birth and a reference number that may identify you to your Insurer for the sole purpose of mlcoa confirming with the Insurer your eligibility to access this Service, and for the purpose of billing the Insurer for this service.
Do I need to have a diagnosis to access this Expert Medical Opinion Service?

Are there any medical conditions which are excluded from this service?

What if I don’t have any or very many medical documents to upload?
Just upload/send what you have. The less information you have, the more general the advice will be. Conversely the more information you provide, the more individualised and specific the advice will be.
How long does this process take?
mlcoa will be in touch if there is any additional information required. You can usually expect your report within in 2 to 3 weeks of submitting your request, depending on specialist availability.
Do I need to undertake a physical examination?
No. In general the medical specialist will provide a response based on a review of the medical records you supply. If however, the medical specialist believes it is important for them to examine you to be able to respond to your questions, then you will be invited to attend an appointment with the medical specialist. There is no cost to you if you decide to proceed with this physical examination. Your attendance for this physical examination however is at your sole discretion. You do not have to attend; in which case let the medical specialist know and they will provide a response based on the information held, and without a physical examination.
Can I speak with the medical specialist?
Yes. Where you have provided consent for this contact to occur (at the time of submitting your initial request to mlcoa), the medical specialist if indicated will contact you to discuss your medical condition and their responses/findings with you.
Can the medical specialist who does my report for me also treat me for my condition?
No. The medical specialist who provides your report will not be involved in any aspect of your treatment. It is important they remain independent as the nature of this service is an independent medical expert service.
What if I don’t understand the report or it recommends a different treatment or diagnosis?
We encourage you to share and discuss your report with your treating doctor if there is anything you do not understand or if there are any changes that are recommended to your current diagnosis or treatment options.
